Recycling Services

I am a general contractor in the San Antonio metropolitan area. A general contractor is responsible for providing all of the material, labor, equipment such as engineering vehicles and tools and services necessary for the construction of the project. I hire specialized subcontractors to perform all or portions of the construction work. Part of my job responsibilities include applying for building permits, securing the property, providing temporary utilities and managing personnel on-site, providing site surveying and engineering, disposing of or recycling construction waste, monitoring schedules and cash flows, and maintaining accurate records.

Aside from my career as a general contractor, I am also the mother of four. When I first began my career, recycling was a foreign concept, as was eco-friendly or green materials. These days, more than just being politically correct, we as an industry and as a society realize that it is important to develop and incorporate eco-friendly ideas into every aspect of life in order to leave a better, cleaner and sustainable environment for our children and grandchildren.

The construction business is disturbingly wasteful. Roughly 90% of all construction and demolition material can be recycled; and yet, it is estimated that C&D waste comprises nearly 30% of the waste stream into our nation s landfills; some experts estimate closer to 45%.

Consider just a single aspect of the construction business: roofing. There is an estimated 10 million tons of asphalt shingle scraps and debris from tear-offs being disposed of each and every year. Thoseare the statistics from the U.S. alone.Landfills are reaching capacity, with thousands scheduled to close in the next few years.

Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum: a hazardous material that carries hefty disposal fees. (Hazardous and liquid wastes have theirown special disposal procedures and regulations.)Unscrupulous contractors will circumvent proper channels for disposal in order to avoid the expense. The reckless disposal of their hazardous waste can have a devastating effect on the environment.

Part of the challenge to industry leaders has been developing and promoting Construction & Demolition (C&D) recycling operationsthat facilitate the environmentally friendly and economically feasible recycling of construction and demolition material. There are several such facilities in operation across the county, the most effective of which offer delivery and pick-up services for proprietary roll-off containers, incentive programs for asphalt shingle recycling, low wait times and competitive tipping rates. Most of these facilities also encourage their contractors to turn in their surplus shingles for re-distribution to wholesalers or other contractors and homeowners at deep discounts. Using wholesale recycled asphalt shingles reduces the need for excess processing of new materials to make shingles, not to mention the additional transportation costs for the new materials.

Reuse, recycling efforts, and waste preventionreduce the air and water pollution associated with the manufacture and transportation of new or virgin materials. In turn, this saves energy andreduces the greenhouse gas productionattendant to these processes. Waste prevention, reuse and recycling can not only save money, but can also generate broad environmental benefits, including the conservation of natural resources.

The C&D recycling already in progress is largely driven by cost-savings for contractors and processors. Opportunities for more aggressive reuse and recycling willimprove as the potential for savings increases, as processors increase their capacity and improvethe marketability of the recoverablematerials, and as the industry becomes more cognizant of savings that they could realize through more aggressiverecycling efforts.

My industry has a lot to learn about the reduction of our environmental impact, but I believe that by making an effort to implement a significant waste management programis a step in the right direction; a step that will help diminish our carbon footprint over time.?

I never really thought about earth-friendly construction, design and materials until my husband and I decided to replace the roof on our home. We weren t new home-owners, but we had never had to replace the roof on a home, so we were not the most informed consumer when it came to roofing materials, quality and design, or tear-off and disposal of the old materials.

In the early 80s, when our home was built, recycling was a foreign concept, as was eco-friendly or green materials. These days, more than just being politically correct, we realize that it is important to develop and incorporate eco-friendly ideas into every aspect of life in order to leave a better, cleaner and sustainable environment for our children and grandchildren.

It was from this mind-set that we began the process of making the selection of a roofing contractor. It was important to us that the contractor that we chose was environmentally responsible. I began looking for a contractor that advertised asphalt shingle recycling or specifically mentioned recycled asphalt shingles in their promotional materials.

It was through this process that I discovered an incredible service available to all contractors and homeowners; Alamo Recycle Centers. Not only do they offer tipping fees that are far less expensive than landfill fees; they deliver and retrieve roll-off containers for the materials, saving the contractor and homeowner the time and expense of transporting the recycled asphalt shingles.

We found a reputable contractor to do the roofing job for us, and suggested that they look into using the asphalt shingle recycling and roll-off container services of Alamo Recycle Centers. They took our suggestion, and have been using the service ever since. Not only do we have a beautiful new roof, we know that our diligence helped to make the world a little greener. And that s a good feeling!

My brother-in-law and his family own a roofing business in Houston, Texas. They hold about 25% of the commercial roofing contracts in the greater Houston area. They also handle roughly 15% of the consumer market contracts when their prolific hurricane season pumps up the volume in their industry.

I am proud to say that my brother in law is a responsible roofer. Not only is he careful to protect the safety of his workers on the job, but he is adamant that his crew be as environmentally friendly as they can be on every project. He knows that his industry disposes of an estimated 10 million tons of asphalt shingles every year. He also knows that, in order to improve the environment and maintain his eco-friendly reputation, he has to make sure that the scraps from his projects become recycled asphalt shingles.

He has a little help with that last item; Alamo Recycle Centers. In order to save his crew the time and expense of hauling their own tear-offs and spending valuable time off-site handling asphalt shingle recycling, they utilize the convenient and reasonably priced roll-off containers and asphalt shingle recyclingservices offered by Alamo.

His crew stays on-site and productive, while the friendly staff at Alamo Recycle Centers delivers the roll-off containers to collect the debris. Once the job is complete, the Alamo staff member returns to collect the full roll-off container and take it to their facility for grinding and complete asphalt shingle recycling. As a bonus, he saves on the hefty landfill fees imposed on hazardous waste materials like recycled asphalt shingles.

I m proud of my brother in law and his commitment to the environment. And I know that he is glad to have a partner in Alamo Recycle Centers.?

We are fortunate to have a local asphalt shingle recycling company that helps us reduce our negative impact on the environment by collecting and re-distributing recycled asphalt shingles, providing roll-off containers to promote the diversion of construction and demolition material previously bound for landfills, and transporting C&D material to their facilities for grinding and on-site recycling. My crews use their roll-off containers on a regular basis to reduce the amount of time and expense wasted on transporting our scrap shingles. Recently, I was also able to reduce our costs on a school project by purchasing surplus recycled asphalt shingles and using them to complete the project in lieu of virgin materials. Those savings allowed the school to purchase additional playground equipment for which they previously had no budget. From a mother s perspective, that s a win-win!

Alamo Recycle Centers facilitates safe, dependable asphalt shingle recycling. I am happy to partner with them in their effort to reduce our carbon footprint and save the environment. IfI reduce my project budgets and save my firm a lot of money in the process, that s just icing on the cake!
